Mountain mine experience in Villanders

Saturday, 17th of October we meet outside the Mine in Villanders to start a wonderful experience: a 2-hour tour inside the mountain, that offers an insight into history of mining. The Pfunders mountain mine in Villanders was one of the most important mining areas in Tyrol during the Middle Ages. After it closed at the beginning of the 20th century, it fell out of memory. Through the work of the culture heritage and museum association of Villanders, the mine has been given an overhaul in recent years and is now open to the public as a visitors’ attraction. The entire network measures 16.5 km. (10 miles), of which two thirds were excavated by hand and one third were blasted with explosives. The Elisabeth tunnel in the Mining World Villanders, 1,670 metres long (5,479 ft.), shows traditional mining methods, the conveyor system and ore processing, as well as the working conditions of the miners, who had a life expectancy of 35 to 40 years. Since 2010 visits have also been possible to the Lorenz mine tunnel.

The mountain and its faces

Mountains are often related and used as a synonym of freedom. It is really hard to understand the limits in between freedom and risk. How far can the desire for freedom reach without risking not only one’s own life but endangering also the society?
Is it ethically correct to go beyond our limits knowing that we might need external aid and spread economic resources. And where does the legal aspect contradict the freedom of mountaineering?
The purpose of the discussion on friday, october 16th will be to give a number of indications and suggestions from different points of view. The medical, legal, ethical, athletic and economic aspect will be considered to present, discuss, and show the limits of the freedom of mountaineering.

The discussion is organized in collaboration with Dott. Luigi Festi, director of the "Master of medicine of high altitude" and the italian alpine club CAI.
