€360,000 Committed to Conservation Projects

Inline Image

This year, EOCA has granted the most ever in a single year to conservation projects around the world.  €301,000 has gone to 11 projects chosen through 2 public votes and 2 member votes.  A further €59,000 has been granted from individual members Original Buff, S.A., Osprey Europe, KEEN Europe and POMOCA, to individual projects of their choice through EOCA.  The money has benefitted projects in 13 different countries – including the UK, Germany, Finland, Romania and Italy, Bangladesh, Uganda and Thailand.  It has benefited forests, mountain habitats, coastlines and oceans and many individual species. You can read all about the projects HERE.  A huge thank you to all our members who made this possible. Photo SAS

279 Funding Applications Received

During the summer funding round, EOCA receive 131 funding applications – the most we have ever received during the summer funding round.  During November, EOCA received 148 applications – around 3 times the number received during the same period last year! Awareness is clearly rising about the funding that the outdoor industry puts into conservation.  Most applications now come directly to EOCA but members are still very much encouraged to nominate projects and ask non-profit organisations to apply so that projects of particular interest to their company can be considered for funding.  Please note that next year, EOCA will be open for funding during June and November –instead of July and November.

We were delighted to welcome Cat Barker on board this year as Conservation Project Coordinator, and we are keeping her very busy reading through and assessing these projects with us!  A big thank you also to our Scientific Advisors who are always available to give us their expert opinions on conservation issues and projects and who always review the shortlist we draw up to ensure that the most worthwhile projects are on that list.  READ MORE Photo credit Francesco Culicelli, Salviamo I'Orso.

1,845,544 Trees to be Planted Towards 2 Million Tree Target.

During OutDoor 2016, EOCA launched an initiative to plant 2 million trees to celebrate having spent €2 million on conservation in 10 years.  To date we have committed to fund the planting of 1,845,544 trees and very much hope to be able to celebrate having reached the 2 million target during 2018…..  Part of this target has been reached through the Association’s first ever public fundraising campaign – to fund tree planting in Nepal. We have had a good response to this – both from the public during the voting periods, and with members Klean Kanteen, Stanley – A PMI brand, KEEN and Original Buff, S.A.  plus the Scandinavian Outdoor Group raising money specifically for this campaign during the ISPO and OutDoor tradeshows in Germany. Communicating that 25 trees would be planted for every €10 raised proved to be a simple and effective way of making the numbers manageable and capturing people’s imagination!  Donations are still being collected via the website, where you can also read about all of the projects contributing to this total HERE.

Over €37, 000 Raised During ISPO and OutDoor

Around one third of EOCA members generously donated gear or held events at the ISPO and/or OutDoor tradeshow this year, enabling a further €37,000 to be raised for conservation!  A huge thank you to all of them!  And to everyone who visited our stand to pick up some gear and make a donation!  Read more  about ISPO HERE  and OutDoor HERE

Over 130 million people reached during the Spring!

For the first time, Outdoor Blogger Network monitored the reach of our spring vote and they measured a reach of over 60.4 million people!!  More HERE.  Hot on the heels of the vote, Sony contacted EOCA to ask if we would be interested in collaborating with them to highlight endangered European species through a photographic campaign. This campaign had a reach of over 70 million!  Both processes proved to be valuable tools in raising awareness of important conservation issues and the work that EOCA and its members are doing to support conservation efforts in the great outdoors.

92% of EOCA Members Engage with EOCA Beyond Paying their Membership

Inline Image

All Members of EOCA are required to pay a membership fee, 100% of which is spent on conservation projects.  Beyond that, members can choose how involved they get in the Association throughout the year.  We are delighted this year that so many members have chosen to go above and beyond with their membership.  This includes: Our Sustaining Members who finance the Association:  OutDoor, ISPO, EOG (also EOCA’s founding member), Patagonia, KEEN, Pertex and Nikwax.  Our Summit Members funding whole projects: Original Buff, S.A., Osprey Europe, KEEN and POMOCA. Ortlieb making a donation to a particular project being supported by EOCA.  Companies who are represented on our Board: VF Corporation, Nikwax, Vaude, Patagonia, Ternua, Marmot and KEEN.  All members who contributed to the fundraising activities.  Arc’teryx who raised extra money on Earth Day through their online European sales. La Sportiva who raised extra money by donating 15% of their online sales income on Black Friday to EOCA.  Those members that read and acted on items in our newsletters. EOCA members who communicated their membership on social media or on their websites. Members that nominated projects and got involved in promoting the votes.  Members who voted in our members vote to select projects to receive funding.  Those that got up early to attend our Annual Assembly before a long day at a tradeshow, to learn all about what the past 12 months had delivered and what the following 12 months promised.  A HUGE thank you to all of them for making EOCA what it is!!

ISPO

Once again, EOCA will have a stand and be attending ISPO in January.  We look forward to seeing some of you there.  Please do get in touch if you would like to book in a meeting with us during the show.  We will also be holding a fundraiser on our stand again this year thanks to the generosity of our members who have donated gear.

Thank you!

Having welcomed 10 new members into EOCA in the last 6 months, we are delighted to leave 2017 with 135 members and partners from the European outdoor industry – all committed to giving back and protecting the great outdoors.  We thank them all for everything they have done this year, and very much look forward to working with them all again in 2018, working together to conserve the mountains, oceans and habitats of the great outdoors!  A big thank you also to everyone who got involved in our public votes this year and also our public fundraiser.  We look forward to reporting back to you next year on the progress of this year's selected projects
